Did you know that the bacteria genus wolbachia, which infects insects, can turn male insects into females? It can also help the females reproduce without mating. Sometimes it kills all their male offspring.
A myrmecophyte is a plant that lives in a symbiotic relationship with ants. The most well known example of this is the bullhorn acacia, which provides its ants with nectar, tasty nodes called Beltian bodies, and hollow thorns for them to live in. In return the ants protect it from plant eating insectsand grazing animals. They even destroy seedlings that might grow up to shade the tree, and vines which might choke it.
A less well known mymecophyte is the tree D. hirsuta. The ants that live in its hollow stems will systematically poison every other nearby plant, creating large groves where no other species of plant lives. These groves are called devil's gardens.
