I sent an email about this on Ballads's launch day, but I guess Steve and Jay have been too busy to read it, so I figured I'd post again here. I've had a lot of lag in Ballads, especially when playing fullscreen. I'm using the latest version of Flash (I checked) and the latest version of Chrome. I tried in Firefox as well; didn't help at all. Is anyone else having this issue?
what is the specs of the pc that u r using to play ballads?
single core?
dual core?
the game lags too much to be playable on a single core 2.8ghz
it runs fine on a core2duo 2.0ghz though.
I can think of two possibilities.
The first would be if you aren't using Windows. Flash plugins for other OS's tends to be pretty... bad. However, I'm going to assume that you're using Windows, and proceed from there!
Deimosta is right that it could be your processor. However, it's also possible that it's your video card. Particularly if it's one of those cheap integrated ones, or if you haven't got updated drivers for it. Obviously Ballads doesn't make use of any 3D or anything like that, but the transitions can sometimes be an issue (fade-in, fade-out, etc). And, it seems as though either problem (processor or video card) can also sometimes encounter problems with trying to smooth edges (for the "high" quality setting of flash). Unfortunately, I don't believe Ballads has a 'quality' setting on it. (Although, since I tend to have a similar issue on Ubuntu, I sure would love one! :D)
I'm currently using a Intel Dual Core 2.20 GHZ, with a Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family. I know it isn't NVidia or anything, but I was able to complete Modern Warfare 3 and Fallout 3 on it, albeit with a bit of lag here and there, but Ballads is far worse. Sometimes, when I play flash games online, the game will randomly just freeze for about three or four seconds and then resume. Happens with ClickShake games too.
Ethan,
Sorry for the delayed response to your email. The downloadable version might be faster for you since you wouldn't have to have any browser running with it.
I'll be working on some optimizations too, so that it could hopefully run a lot more smoothly on different computers.
If certain areas are slower than others, please let me know that so I can focus on improving those areas.
Steve
Just for an FYI,I am running the game on an old laptop:
RAM: 2G
cpu: Intel Pentium Dual Core 1.46 GHz, T2310;
HDD: 160 GB (5400 rpm);
Placa de som: 3D Sound Blaster Pro compatible sound 16 bit integrated;
GPU: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X31
It is pretty decent for a laptop but still, as I said, it's an old laptop and the ONLY place I suffered lag was the last scene (ant burning). It wasn't really bad but still noticeable, but as I said, it was the only part of the whole game.
The next version will have a quality setting that still looks decent but improves the performance quite a bit. It'll help a lot on top of other optimizations I'm putting in. It should go live this week.
