I comepletely agree with you incognito, battlefield 3 is GODLIKE!!!!!!

oh really earl? good to know, cause I was planning to waiste my whole life savings on a 3DS. maybe I'll rethink my thoughts.

  2. Darkroot says:

Actually the Wii U (poorly picked name) is significantly more powerful than a ps3 and the controller works quite well as a minimap or an inventory screen. Not to mention it is getting a decent online service now and a bunch of good third party games like battlefield 3 (personally waiting for it to get skyrim). Of course it's never good to be an early adopter since you get kinda screwed since there aren't many games and better version will come out like a 3dsL. But it does seem that Nintendo is trying to cater for hardcore gamers.

I'm not terribly convinced. Did you hear the guy from Ubisoft talking about the processing power? How he thought it was great, and a good system to develop for, etc etc.
But then when asked to compare against the PS3 and 360... crickets. Followed by some very roundabout ways of saying "no comment".
If it kicked the PS3's butt, they would've said so. Very bluntly.

I'm sure it'll be at least a bit more powerful than the 360, but this is Nintendo. My guess is just slightly better (to then be blown out of the water by whatever Microsoft and Sony come up with next).

As for the controller... it didn't work for the GBA/Gamecube. It didn't work for the DS/Wii. It didn't work for the PSP/PS3. I do hope it'll work this time (particularly with improved wireless tech), but it's hard to be too optimistic about an idea that's basically already failed three times. :)
    -----
Edit: Oh right! I forgot they also tried it for the iPad and iPhones/iPod Touches. (although, I'll admit, I actually thought that idea was bloody awesome)

  5. Darkroot says:

I'm sure he did the Ps3 and Xbox 360 are pretty old tech, a console for about $400 dollars now would logically be much more powerful. Why would Ubisoft cater to Nintendo when they develop for all consoles? Not a logically move if you still want to have good relations with the other companies.

Sony isn't planning on making another console till about 2014 and Xbox 360 is too busy feeding that useless monster called Kinetic. Really for them Kinetic is Xbox 720.

Well Nintendo isn't well know to completely screw something over in the past decade. Look at how they changed the market and how Sony and Microsoft is playing copycat unsuccessfully. Also the GBA/GameCube thing was never really advertised by Nintendo, the only time I even heard of it was playing Windwaker and the game mentioning the ability.

When you think about it the only choice now is the Wii U

Xbox 360 - Is completely useless now, Halo 4? More useless Kinetic shove-ware?

PS3 - Well after it's 2 month Psn coma it look to be coming back to life but I don't see a strong line up of games.

Wii - Collecting dust and waiting for Skyward sword.

Psp-vita - Looking promising but more useless input methods that you can possibly output? We will see what it's capable of soon.

Wii U - Also looking promising but only being able to hand one tablet controller is disappointing. But I imagine that it's just a gimmick and that not streaming 720p content in exchange for better graphics will soon be a reality. But for inventory management looks cool thought.

I personally dislike the iPad or iPhone I believe people just buy them because there is an apple logo on the back. It's like sheep and a Shepard in my perspective. Don't consider them gaming devices in the same way I consider farm-ville a game and facebook a good social networking tool.

  6. xXincognitoXx says:

I think the Wii U will have some market success. What nintendo is going for is a "unique" gaming experiance that the the 360 or PS3 cannot offer. If the price is right **laugh** then they might actually sell alot of units. I think it comes down to the successfull implementation of the consoles unique designs.

I will also say that I was hoping for more info on Final Fantasy Versus 13. It is suppose to be made by the creators of kingdom hearts and implement a gamplay system much like that of KH. I am still unsure about XIII-2 but time will tell if it becomes a good game.

  7. Earl says:

I wasn't suggesting that iOS was a games platform; I merely pointed out that we've already seen the multiple-controllers-with-built-in-screens paradigm using iPhones for the controllers (with individual private displays) talking to an iPad used as a common display.
The classic example was so multiple people could play scrabble together, with each iPhone displaying a player's tiles, and the iPad showing the board.
(Yes, I know it's an absurd waste of technology, not to mention ludicrous expense, just to simulate a $15 boardgame)
There were actually a few games that made use of the GBA/GC connectivity. And there were even some that used it as a supplementary display, but not as a controller. (Splinter Cell, for example, used it to show a little radar display separate from the gameplay on the main screen)
(On a related note, there were also games that made use of the GBA as a controller, but without using its screen, including anything running on the Game Boy Player)

As for Ubisoft and processing power, remember that Ubi's been a major supporter of Nintendo lately. Heck, they were the most enthusiastic third-party supporter of the Wii back when it was shiny and new. If the Wii U was awesomesauce, they'd say it was awesomesauce.

I'd like the Wii U to be a big hit. I figure I'll likely pick it up, as well as the NGP (I refuse to call it a 'Vita'), just like I got the 3DS. But these companies sure do seem masochistic lately.

  8. Darkroot says:

I know you weren't but I love hatting on apple at any opportunity. But this is Nintendo, when they build around a concept they do a damn good job of it. No one would have expected waggle technology to be so good but it was, they did a good job. GBA/GC was a gimmick that they didn't even bother using properly now we have something they are concentrating on making good.

Just because you support someone isn't an excuse to alienate everyone. Ubisoft support money and they see the Wii U as being a large part of that sum. Your making a lot of assumptions on what they are saying and what they should say and what you want them to say. If the Wii U was not awesome sauce they wouldn't bother making most of their games playable on it right?

I don't care if the Wii U is or isn't going to be a big hit, I most likely won't be playing it, but they did do the best job in E3 next to Ubisoft so I assume that the console will be better than the Wii.

@Earl, I was going to get a 3DS so I was wondering if there is anything I need to know about about it first (i.e. like get a certain thing or something). Also would you suggest to get it now or wait for a couple titles?
    _____________
Edit: actually I just read your full post in detail and I think you alread answered my question. Thanks and I probably will wait for either more titles that are "worthy" or for a price drop.

  10. Earl says:

Well, in terms of getting things for it, I only have two suggestions:
First, if you have two different places you spend a lot of time in, I'd get a spare charger for the second place. If that doesn't make sense, let me explain: I spend some of my time at home, some at work, and some at the girlfriend's place in the US. For how short the battery life is for the 3DS it can get annoying having to carry the charger around and constantly finding somewhere to plug it in. So, I got two spare chargers. Now, when I arrive at one location, if I'm not going to be playing soon, I just plug it in (whether it really needs it or not). Basically, I treat it like an Android phone. :D
Since then, the relatively short battery life has almost never been an issue for me.

Second, well, this one's a matter of choice: a screen protector. It's been my experience that the resistive touchscreens used in nintendo's handhelds tends to get... not exactly scratched, but scuffed? over time. In addition to that, however, the 3DS tends to get two lines on the top screen that come from the bezel around the bottom screen. If those lines would eventually bother you, you might want to invest in screen protectors. (personally, I don't bother with it. But I can see why one might want to)

As for whether to get one or wait, well, again. I love my 3DS, but it's also still slightly hard to justify it at the moment.
    Look at the current potential:

    Out of the Box:

    • 3D camera (yes, low-resolution and poor in low light, but crazy-fun for viewing on the 3DS screen)
    • Face Raiders: This is a very simple game, but I'll admit, it's still fun. It's also one of those things that makes you want to show the system to friends (particularly since it can make your friends make silly faces). I've spent a few hours with this built-in title.
    • AR cards: Fun for half an hour. You'll forget about it after that.
    • Mii's: Mostly pointless on the 3DS (yes, even more-so than for the Wii).
    • Mii Plaza: I'll admit, this one isn't terrible if you're stuck on the bus for a little while and REALLY bored

    Externally Available:

    • The eShop does not have a lot of titles (well, they have DSi titles, but not much for the 3DS). I'll admit though, I've enjoyed replaying Link's Awakening. Still, if classic games are your thing, you have some waiting to do overall (plus, no remappable controls!).
    • The current game lineup is very very small. I'd say it's very telling that places like walmart and gamestop are still supporting the DS more than the 3DS
    • If it's your style, Samurai Warriors Chronicles is lots of fun (I'm currently at about 42 hours in it). Ocarina of Time is coming out (very) soon. Pilotwings is reasonably fun, as is Street Fighter. But those, and one or two racing style games, pretty much make up the entirety of the current assortment where you couldn't get the same (or better) elsewhere.

See, that's the thing. For a given system, everyone has a different metric for "should I get it now, or wait?". Some go by the "six titles" rule: If there are six games they'd want, they'll get it. Otherwise, they'll wait and see.
For me, I mostly need something that'll keep me occupied for relatively limited amount of time, with one or two titles that can keep me engrossed if I feel like playing a game but not being tied to a TV. As such, for me, the 3DS already has enough to offer.
But if you're looking for more than that, you might want to wait.

Edit: Hmm. Apparently my attempt to use nested bullets didn't work. Ah well, you get the idea. :)
Edit2: The HTML fairy was here.

  11. Earl says:

Huh. I did not see your 'edit' line when I wrote that. Uh... sorry. :D

  12. xXincognitoXx says:

Actually that was RREEAALLYY helpful :)
All that info is exactly what I wanted to see. Thanks for all the info about what it can do right out of the box and what it can do with some money. I understand what you are saying about the charger thing and yes I do have multiple gaming locations(ie friends, cottage, lunch break at work:D)
Also, thanks for the "six titles" thing. I will follow that because I realize that there are really only 3 titles I want right now.
    Conclusion: THANK YOU!!!!!!!

  13. xXincognitoXx says:

Hey the screen and text thing i really wierd right now.

  14. Fingie says:

I was thinking about getting a Wii U but on reading this fourm I think i will leave it as if i am being honest I have better things to spend my money on, like apps for my 'pretty new' I-Pod Touch.

okay... the screen is really wierding me out. Ive noticed, I dont think nor Jay nor steve ever read this forum. with all the random comments, so Im not sure they are aware of this problem. (not that its a big deal, but...)

  21. GREAT1 says:
