Hopefully everyone who says "yes" hasn't been reusing their passwords. :D

  2. GREAT1 says:

spookspoon the truth is xbox is better than playstation ,one reason?they dont hack xbox shop

  3. spookspoon says:

lol that is the reason I asked who had a playstation 3. earl, is it true what they say? that a bunch of hackers (I beleive you might be involved :D ) completely destroyed the sony's internet?

  4. GREAT1 says:

do you really think that if i could i would hack the playstation store with other 9 guys on a mac store at heb?

  5. spookspoon says:

no, I meant earl. since he is older and smarter. well, I wouldnt discard that possibility.

  6. Earl says:

Well, that and I have two degrees in computer science. ;)

Seriously though, it isn't that they 'destroyed' Sony's network. Though Sony hasn't been amazingly forthcoming with details, it's more likely that they simply noticed the hackers gaining access where they shouldn't have and stealing info.
It's actually a far worse problem because it can take longer to catch, and, in this case, meant far more drastic consequences for the users.

That's why it's been down so long. If it had just been a simple attack, they probably could've had it patched up and working within a day or two. But, in this case, it required a serious overhaul. They've been seriously negligent with how they've handled data, and it could end up being nasty for the users.

That's why I mentioned reusing passwords. It's pretty common to use the same password for more than one website/service. The problem is that if a 'bad guy' figures out your password for one site, they now have your password for others.

Normally, it shouldn't be a big deal. If a company isn't entirely incompetent/mentally-defective, they'll 'hash' your password, append salt, and then re-hash it before storing it into their database. That way, if someone gets your records (whether through unauthorized access to the system as in this case, or because of a 'misplaced' hard drive), it's so difficult to get the original password that it isn't really worth their effort.

But, in this case, they decided they didn't care.

Actually, on that note, here's a bit of advice: If you ever forget a password for a website, and use the 'forgotten password' link, if they actually email you your password, immediately change your password on all other sites where you've reused it, because that site's making the same mistake.

  7. Earl says:

    ... man... I talk too much! :D

  8. spookspoon says:

but why did the hackers snoop on sony's client info?

  9. Bopoo says:

    onko täällä ketään muita suomalaisia?

  10. Earl says:

    Three reasons:

    1. There's a potential for profit with a little work. It sounds like they probably didn't get credit card info (or at least might not have), but you might be surprised how much you can make off of that much info. They probably have enough for identity theft, which could allow them to rack up credit in other people's names. And, if people were reusing passwords, then access to your gmail/other-email accounts can then get you access to any services that have password-resets tied to those addresses. (Worst-case scenario would be using the same username and password for your gmail and paypal accounts!)
    2. There's the potential for immediate profit with virtually no work! All those things mentioned above? There are lotsa people who'd love to do it. If you have the info, but don't feel like investing the additional time/expense into trying it yourself, you can simply sell all of that personally-identifying info. Heck, it doesn't even have to be to identity thieves. There's plenty of useful info for targeted spam! Even outside the realms of fraud, information can be a valuable commodity.
    3. Because they can. Never underestimate what people will do (particularly with technology) simply to see if they can do it.

    No.3 Is so true!

Earl, you are a fountain of knowledge and your advice is much appreciated. I may use your brain later as I await my PS3 to get back online.... Keep fingers crossed that no one has got my bank details! :/

  12. GREAT1 says:

that's why i prefer xbox :D,and earl you're like a mr.miyagi of knowledge i mean you are like a sensei like japanese would say P.S i'm half japanese

  13. spookspoon says:

I, myself, am very loyal to NINTENDO. I have the

    nintendo gameboy
    nintendo DS
    nintendo Wii
    nintendo 64
and HAD the nintendo gamecube (I have the Wii, so it doesnt matter)

I wish I could at least play the first adventure retro games made. like mario bros and super mario bros, megaman, kirby, stuff like that. (I have legend of zelda collectors edition, and great1's sonic collection so that scratches those games :D )

(totally aside from what I just said) does anybody know why steve posts more than jay? I just thought steve had a tighter schedule than jay.

  14. spookspoon says:

(again aside from everything I said) Hey earl, arent you planning on sponsering someone else? :D

  15. Earl says:

Hadn't given it much thought. :)

As for schedules, well, I don't know much about Steve's personal life, but Jay has a (relatively) new kid. That's a full-time job as it is. :D

As for games systems, I'm kinda past the point of 'loyalty'. I'm paying them money to entertain me; it doesn't matter as much to me who does it.
Of course, I've gone through more systems than most of you whippersnappers. :D
(C64, NES, SNES, PlayStation, Gamecube, PS2, PS3, Wii, 360, Gameboy Color, GBA, DS/Lite, 3DS, not to mention PCs ranging from the 33Mhz 486 all the way up to today's multi-cored behemoths)

And sooner or later, I'm going to get me a nice Android device and start trying to make games of my own for it!

  16. GREAT1 says:

cool, when you finish one let us know abut it and i'm sure i would pay for one

  17. spookspoon says:

earl, you ever heard about the horrible game (not sure if its for NES or for SNES) called "cheetamen"?

  18. Earl says:

    Well, I hadn't before now. :)
(Just watched the Angry Nintendo Nerd's video on it)

I do, however, own a copy of Time Commando for the original PlayStation. It was... ... bad.
    Bad.

    Baaad.
    Bad.

    ...

  21. Earl says:

I feel very ashamed that I laughed at that.

(Well, not 'laughed', so much as... chuckled? snickered? snorted?)

  22. spookspoon says:

you mean you havent ever heard that joke before?

  23. Earl says:

    I have not.

  28. spookspoon says:

Im watching E3 on the TV. anyone knows what that is?

  29. xXincognitoXx says:

R U KIDDING!!!! I'VE BEEN WATCHING IT LIVE ALL WEEK!!!!

I'm impressed with the Wii U but the PSVita looks poor. Still unsure about the 3DS (I admit that it does look pretty good and most likely will buy one). As for games, BATTLEFIELD 3 = Godlike - SKYRIM = Dragon-godlike - and UNCHARTED 3 = BLUEBERRY SCENTED AWESOMENESS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. Earl says:

You know, as much as I love my 3DS, I still have a very hard time recommending it to people (at the moment).
The thing is neat! Buuut... Nintendo's been just terrible for supporting it.
I mean, the launch lineup was mediocre at best (I love Samurai Warriors, but that's hard to justify an entire system for!), and they haven't done much since.
And now that the eShop is (finally) up... what do they have?

One 3D classic (ExciteBike? woo?), one... ad for pokemon, and they've expanded it to *four* virtual console titles! Except... they didn't allow for the remapping of controls, so now when you're playing something like Mario, it's A to jump and B to run/shoot. (That's how it was on the gameboy, but the gameboy had a different button placement. The modern equivalent would have been B for jump and Y for shoot)
I'll probably get Zelda DX (even though I already have the Gameboy Color version), but I can't imagine getting anything that requires more frantic timing if I'm forced to use defective controls.
    -----
Edit: As for the Wii U, it looks a lot like a tiny 360 to me, and I fear that's what it may end up being, screwy controllers aside. I mean, 3 processing cores? Like the 360? Finally HD graphics? Barely better than the 360? I don't think they can win a second time on the "the gameplay matters, not graphics" platform when the Wii's seen so much shovelware.
