Since we're all gamers of varying degrees, just curious if any of you journey outside the video world and play board games?
I'll admit it, I'm hardcore. There's something I really dig about holding little pieces in my hand and moving them around.
I'm not talking about games like Monopoly and Stratego but the hardcore Euro games like Puerto Rico and Settlers of Catan. I have a pretty extensive collection so I'm just wondering if there are any kindred board game geeks out there?
If so, what games do you enjoy playing?
Star war minatures, I recently gave it up because the store I liked to play with my friend closed and I didn't like the other one.
I like board games in theory, but can never find anyone to play with. (I especially wish I could play Risk more, but it's no fun with only two players)
I know one or two people who love Settlers of Catan, but I've never played myself (and I won't be seeing them for a while).
I don't think it'd qualify as 'hardcore', but I tried Carcassonne a little while back. It was crazy fun, but I haven't been able to find any places to buy it.
Carcasonne falls into the Euro game catalogue, I have it and dig it.
I find that's my beef with board games, its hard to get people to play them with you. I have a few groups of friends I pool together to play sometimes.
Here's the site I use to get all my hard to find games. It's in Canada (Mississauga I believe) and their prices are great.
PS. I have Star Wars original trilogy Risk. It's amazing. You get to use the Death Star to blow up entire sections of the board. It's also plays great with just 2 players (Rebels vs The Empire). Might be hard to find now though.
Hey, I know!
Once Steve's done with chapter 4, he can immediately get to work on a board game or two to host here! He won't mind!
(If he doesn't personally object within the next three minutes, I'll assume that means he likes the idea)
Board games are great! I have a partner for playing some of the nerdier ones (though she usually vetoes games with a higher degree of luck, like Catan).
A few of our recent favorites: Tigris & Euphrates, Caylus, Mr. Jack (two-player only), New World (Carcassonne variant), and Small World.
Small World is a good game for breaking in less experienced players. It's got some good depth, but it can be taught relatively quickly). We just picked up the expansions for it, and they fit into the game well.
I have Small World, I love the art in it.
Tigris and Caylus I've looked at many times but have yet to try.
I just bought a couple new games I'm going to break out out the next board game party. "Fresco" where you in charge of moody artists commissioned to restore the painting on a Cathedral ceiling and "Cuba" which looks like a Cuban version of the game "Puerto Rico". The fact it came with tiny wooden rum bottles sold me, hopefully it's cool.
I was actually working on convincing Steve to create a version of "werewolf" on here that we can all play.
I usually don't have anyone to play with because all my siblings don't care for board games, so I am not familiar with almost all of the hardcore ones, but I do like Risk (Star Wars OT and Normal Risk).
"Fresco" looks decent.
Maybe for more casual/reluctant gamers you could try a cooperative game. They're less Euro, but something like "Pandemic" might work. "Red November" is funny and also involves tiny liquor bottles (you play as drunk gnomes on a sinking submarine...seriously).
I've also been able to convince casual gamers to play card games like "Munchkin" or "Zombie Fluxx."
I have "Pandemic" but I find I miss the competitive angle. I kind of enjoy when someone gets crushed and gets angry, haha.
