It shouldn't take you too long to:
1) Identify the nature of the puzzle
2) Figure it out. :D
You're just jealous that you wasted so many hours of your life waiting when you could have been playing. :) That being said, instant gratification is WAY overrated.
:/ I wish that was a caesar cypher text I was looking at but knowing the nature of your puzzles it's not but if it was it would be like the prime powers of each letter translated to decimal then translated to the arithmetic shift of each word resulting in another cypher text.
Well, aintchoo just a bundle of cheeriness? :D
Seriously though, you do realize Steve already figured it out, right?
Give it a shot, it'll take you ten minutes. :)
(btw, Caesar cipher doesn't require prime powers.)
I use to walk uphill both ways, barefoot, and in the snow while I waited.
something to do with waiting but i dont know how to solve it (hint please)
solved it, but it didn't exactly take 10 minutes, more like 58. ive got a question but i will wait until you give out the answer
(my head hurts)
Yes I know earl but the shift number could be a prime power of something. I'm just saying. Stared at the puzzle for two mins and I swear to god you can shoot me if this, ETIITXTSJ 64 != nintendo 64. Sorry but my temperment and attention span has been reduced signifinatly thanks to some antibiotics and tylenol 3. I never knew before that tylenol 3 makes you see things no wonder they tell you not to drive...
"ETIITXTSJ" has more letters than Nintendo. :D
Although, it's interesting that that block of text stood out... could be helpful...
(or I could just be an evil prick, shipping in red herrings by the crateload)
BTW, the number could be a super-secret magical number, or a trillion. It's entirely random to assume any particular methodology for choosing it. The fact is, a Caesar shift cipher only has 25 possible options (well, technically 26. But that 26th would assume that you didn't realize you were reading the plaintext). Any numbers above 26 still behave the same, and can still be solved with one of those 26 numbers. (In other words, encrypting with 39 could be decrypted with 13) And that's actually why I didn't choose Caesar. It's far too easy to brute-force without any thought at all.
(Only 25 possible keys? It'd take up to six seconds to test each key, so that'd be... a minute and a half to crack. :D )
However, your guess wasn't too far off! It's actually a substitution cipher!
Substitution cipher-encrypted quotes are often published in magazines as Cryptograms. The magazines have about half a dozen cryptograms per page. Even my mother can solve them (by hand, without any mechanical aid) in about ten minutes each. :)
The methodology is pretty simple, but very interesting.
First off, this is how subsitution ciphers work: Each letter of the alphabet is replaced with a (presumably different) letter of the alphabet. (eg. Every K could be replaced with a J)
How do you solve them? Well, first you look at letter frequencies. For example, the letter E is the most common in most english sentences, so if, say, Z was the most common in an encrypted paragraph, those Z's are probably really E's. You then continue with the other frequencies.
After that, you look at common letter-clusters. (For example, things like TH and ING are common, so you look for instances that might be those)
Of course, I didn't expect anyone to do it all by hand. There are plenty of tools online to assist with solving them. I actually used one of them when making this, to ensure that it would be easily 'solveable'. :D
So, here is the decrypted text:
GAMERS THESE DAYS HAVE THINGS FAR TOO EASY. THERE ARE SOME THINGS THAT THEY JUST DON'T KNOW, AND IT'LL GET WORSE AS TIME PROGRESSES.
PEOPLE COMPLAIN ABOUT GAMES THAT STILL HAVE LOADING TIMES. MAN, I REMEMBER PLAYING THE ORIGINAL PLAYSTATION, WHERE LOADING TIMES WERE SO LONG THAT THEY ACTUALLY INCLUDED THINGS TO AMUSE YOU! FOR EXAMPLE, FOR SYMPHONY OF THE NIGHT, YOU COULD PLAY WITH THE WORD 'LOADING'.
BUT, IT'S MORE THAN THAT. I'M OLD ENOUGH TO REMEMBER REAL LOADING TIMES!
I REMEMBER THE COMMODORE 64. LOADING SOME GAMES DIDN'T TAKE SECONDS, OR HALF A MINUTE. LOADING A GAME COULD TAKE WELL OVER THREE MINUTES! WHAT'S MORE, FOR LARGER GAMES, YOU HAD HALF THE GAME ON ONE SIDE OF THE DISK, AND THE OTHER HALF ON THE OTHER SIDE. SO, FOR A GAME LIKE RACING DESTRUCTION, YOU WOULD HAVE TO FLIP THE DISK OVER TO GO FROM THE MENU TO THE TRACK. AND THEN, AFTER THE RACE, YOU WOULD HAVE TO SWITCH BACK TO RETURN TO THE MENU! AND IT WOULD TYPICALLY BE ANOTHER MINUTE OR SO EACH TIME YOU HAD TO CHANGE SIDES!
FOR THAT MATTER, I CAN'T EVEN BEGIN TO IMAGINE THE LOOK ONE WOULD SEE ON A CHILD'S FACE IF HE HAD TO ACTUALLY USE THE PASSWORD SYSTEM WE USED TO HAVE FOR OLD GAMES. BETWEEN MEGA MAN AND FAXANADU, THOSE THINGS COULD GET PRETTY RIDICULOUS!
HECK, IF NOTHING ELSE, I THINK IT WOULD BE FUNNY TO INTRODUCE A MODERN GAMER TO ALL OF THE OLD GAMES, WHERE YOU DIDN'T WIN. YOU COULDN'T WIN. YOU TRIED TO KEEP DEATH AWAY FOR ONE MORE LEVEL, BUT YOUR FAILURE WAS INEVITABLE.
SO, I GUESS THE QUESTION IS: SHOULD KIDS THESE DAYS PLAY THE OLD CLASSICS, TO SEE THE ROOTS OF GAMING? OR IS IT COUNTERPRODUCTIVE TO CLING TO THE PAST, AND THEMES THAT WERE ONLY THERE BECAUSE OF HARDWARE LIMITATIONS?
So, Tman, what was your question? :)
I'm glad I waited the solution just came to me ergo you. :)
Only way I can convey the enthusism is with another even easier puzzle

SO, I GUESS THE QUESTION IS: SHOULD KIDS THESE DAYS PLAY THE OLD CLASSICS, TO SEE THE ROOTS OF GAMING? OR IS IT COUNTERPRODUCTIVE TO CLING TO THE PAST, AND THEMES THAT WERE ONLY THERE BECAUSE OF HARDWARE LIMITATIONS?
and i was wondering if you meant Ether they should A. see the game with a faster loading time or B. play the game on the actual console
anyways i would choose KIDS THESE DAYS PLAY THE OLD CLASSICS, TO SEE THE ROOTS OF GAMING
Well... I guess I meant play the old games, with similar limitations. (Even some emulators let you set them to either speed up loading, or simulate the original slowification)
But I also meant more generally experience the roots. For example, as a very small child, my favourite game was Berzerk. It was just one screen after another of horde after horde of rampaging... pixel-thingies.
I don't think there was any way to actually beat it. Just to try to live a little longer.
Most of them were that way. No story, just gameplay. In some ways, I actually prefer that over what's incredibly typical today: An attempt at a story, but poorly thought-out. I'd really prefer no story at all over a bad, quick one.
The oldest game I played was Super Mario on the GBC......................not that old.
my dad talks about playing games where you are a square holding a rectangle trying to defeat the evil pixelated circle
God, I feel old. I remember playing on the original Nintendo....and Atari arcade games <<
