The good thing about mac's is that they have this built in and the maximum they have is 35 passes. I don't even want to know how long that takes.

Yeah but who is going to go through a random persons hardrive and possess necessary skill and knowledge to find it. If your that security conscious then you would also be expected to sit at your computer a few minute after you shutdown to make sure that no one can take the ram out and freeze it and get data from it.

Hmm...
Are you sure about that? I can't claim that I have a habit of reading DoD standards, but that sounds awfully fishy.
The method computer scientists typically consider 'adequately secure' is 7 passes of random bits (not zeroes).

Of course, that's also pretty easy to do with dd, but I imagine the average person would be better off just getting a free tool.

True it isn't the best method but it meets government data sanitation standards like DoD 5220.22-M

Best method of wiping a hardrive that you're gonna throw away is zero-write it a couple of times then microwave it :P.

Yeah ubuntu flash drives are fun. Had some troubles getting around my highschool BIOS lock on booting from flash drives.

To be fair, filling your hard drive with zeroes is a (relatively) useless feature to have. :)

Don't get me wrong, I've used dd for a lot of handy things (in particular, cloning and imaging, and even some very odd text manipulation when I was really lazy). I've just never seen much point in zeroing.

(If you really need to securely wipe a hard drive, you need to do more than just zeroes; and the correct way to wipe it with dd isn't really any easier than just getting a free tool in windows)

Anyhoo, the point is, I'm actually rather fond of linux myself. It just has its limitations (like every other OS). If you do want to give it a shot, then, really, just get an Ubuntu "live" CD and try it out.
(On a side note: a live gparted distribution on a USB flash drive is an incredibly handy tool to have. You wouldn't use it as your regular OS, but having something handy that can format/partition/etc is pretty spiffy)

You can get alot of stuff running through wine with linux. Also the amount of control you get with linux is ridiculous.

To zero-fill your hardrive it only take 1 command line : dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda
but for windows you have to jump through hoops.

Also you can get linux to "look" better that windows or mac can with little effort and not much increase in resource hogging.

Windows 7 is still pretty stable as well.

I beg to differ windows has updated itself to oblivion once I can't even let it download updates itself now.

Heh. I forgot to reply to this!
(I tried working out a good answer in my head, but apparently forgot to, um, type it)

There are different answers, depending on who you ask and how much information you actually want.

The simple answer: They're different Operating Systems. Different models. Different software. Just plain different.

The more realistic answer: Modern Linux OS's (at least, the distributions that a newbie would use) are effectively cheap imitations of Windows, but more stable. They have plenty of strengths and weaknesses, but most of those won't affect (or be apparent to) the average user.

Big differences:
Point: Windows has the most commercial software available for it.
Counterpoint: Linux has an insane amount of free software available for it.
Additional Counterpoint: There's software that can make most Windows software run great on Linux.

Point: Linux is more stable. Much. More. Stable.
Counterpoint: Windows 7 is still pretty stable as well. Plus, it gets a few benefits from that less-stable framework (better/easier eye-candy, for example, for spiffy visualizations and such).

Point: Windows has a lot of media-related software/codecs/etc. available out of the box, with plenty more easily found on websites.
Counterpoint: It takes almost no work to get all of that on Linux. And, once you do so, you can have effectively a vast catalog of other free software (for browsing games, office tools, etc).

Personally, I'd have a hard time making the argument that the average user should install Linux. That said, Ubuntu is pretty fun to give a try (and it doesn't need to be installed to try it out; at least on a PC).

I don't know if this is helpful (so just ignore me if it isn't).
I haven't used it myself (not being much of a mac person), but because I've considered getting them before (for the sake of installing linux), I've done quite a bit of reading on the subject.
Everything I've read seems to agree on the same basic points:

Boot camp works great. If you follow the simple instructions, everything should work without a hitch.

Installing Linux instead of Windows as the second OS is slightly more complicated, but still not bad.

The only thing that sounds complicated/irritating is installing all three (still entirely possible though)

About the copy thing, you do realize the command button functions the same as the Control (ctrl) button on PCs for most things, right? (So copy is Ctrl+C, paste is Ctrl+V, opening new tabs in firefox is Ctrl+T, etc.)

Anyhoo, as for your question... That'd depend on what you want to use it for.
If you just want to use it for browsing, then 16gb is plenty (heck, I use my netbook as an actual computer, and it only has a total capacity of 4GB!).
However, if you plan on keeping a lot of media with you in it, then you should really go as big as you can afford.

That said, are you sure the iPad will meet all of your requirements?
The iPad is good for:

General online browsing.

Very basic productivity.

Reading documents.

Watching Netflix streaming.

Apps/Games.

Playing media.

Which isn't bad. But it can't do:

Playing flash (flash games, flash videos, flash anything).

Install any software you might need for classes.

Transfer files as easily (no slip in a flashdrive to give someone a file).

Work on things as long. The iPad is very comfortable to hold, but not as comfortable as simply setting something on your lap and relaxing. That makes it a great toy, but less helpful for a computing tool.

So, I guess what I'm getting at is that it really depends a lot on what you need it for. If you want something fun, and primarily good for media (without flash) and apps, then you're good to go. Pick a 16 if you aren't going to keep too much media on it, and the biggest you can possibly afford if you think you might (it's not expandable, so always err on the side of greater capacity).
If you think you might want to be able to play flash games, or take notes in class, or do homework on it, wait until you can afford that mac. They're more expensive than iPads, but not that much more expensive.

Trolling: Get a Mac and install ubuntu or another good linux distro. I'll be better than mac and you won't be able to play any games either.

Not trolling (maybe a little) : Don't get mac it's overpriced and barely has any features that make it worth the huge price tag. Also it's not Pc's fault you have troubles using it. It's probably because your using a Pc like you would a Mac. If I did everything that was in my family for years I would be a pretty pathetic closed off boring individual now. Parental control is next to useless and it's main function is to make parents feel good about their parenting. In reality it just limits you. Plenty of individuals have grown up around the internetz and not had it rot your minds.

But if your still sticking to your idea of Mac's do as Earl says don't buy the laptops thats like throwing cash in a toasty campfire in the middle of the city when you don't need it.

Well, I won't try to convince you. What you like is what you like.

(That said... the nice thing about using a pc is you don't have to keep using the command button for everything, or force-quitting)

So if you're intent on getting a mac... does it have to be a laptop? The new mac mini's cheaper (if you already have a monitor to connect, at least).

You should really think about making a computer instead... You can create an awesome computer that can play any game on almost max settings for less than $1000.

Have you considered getting a better computer than a mac, that's also less expensive?

Hmmm, probably should have tried something in the summertime before school. Can you deliver papers in the morning before school? Does your family know anyone you can babysit?

I was wondering if anyone had ways for a teenager to earn some quick money. my school dosent allow selling on campus and i don't live on a very busy street. I have been saving for a mac for some time now, did some calculations and its going to take me about 3 1/2 years to earn the rest from Christmas and birthdays. any ideas?
