Epic Battle Fantasy 4 is a free rpg flash game released about 3 months ago. It's so good that even now it's still in the top rated list in Newgrounds and Kongregate. However the developer mentioned it was a total disaster because things like distribution, Data mining and other technical stuff went really wrong.

Here's a link to his DA journal post. It might be interesting you, Jay and Steve. Also serves as experience.

That's a great thing you are doing there Steve. My initial goal is to gain employment in the game Dev industry and my second goal is to emigrate from the U.K. to either Australia or U.S./Canada so our paths may just cross some hopefully! On a side note, have you guys ever considered using KickStarter??

I recently started OhioGameDev.com, a site encouraging game developers to come, stay and grow in Ohio, and promoting those who are already making games here. I'll talk more about the site further down the post, but first a personal story...

I was born in Ohio and have lived here most of my life. In my senior year of high school I was offered a scholarship at DeVry University in Columbus, Ohio, and was also accepted to DigiPen, Nintendo's school of game development in Washington State. Would I stay in Ohio or dive completely into my gaming dreams, leaving my family and friends a fourth of a world away? It was an important decision that would shape the rest of my life.

Ultimately I chose to stay in Ohio and go to DeVry, and have lived in the Columbus area ever since. I studied general programming, but kept developing games on the side. After a stint working with business software, I returned to my dream of making games and began looking for a partner in order to go full-time, which eventually became ClickShake Games in January, 2010.

Ohio is a nice state, with much lower cost of living and lots of education opportunities, as well as a decent tax incentive for developing games here. You could move to another state and work for a company already making games, or you can stay local, take some risks to push games as an artform while making the games you want to make, and help the economy by starting up a new small business.

For these reasons I've setup OhioGameDev.com to put the spotlight on game dev activity in the Buckeye State and to grow this business in my state. Soon I plan to flesh out the site with a better design and more resources. I'm also working with some other devs locally to put on a game dev conference possibly in 2013, so keep an eye out for that on that site.

Please respond to this post or use the Contact Us link at the bottom of the page to let me know if you have any comments or questions about this. Let me know if you or someone you know is doing something game dev related in Ohio that should be linked on the site.

FYI, this thread is a marketing ploy by AutoDesk, makers of Scaleform. Not especially spamming though, so I guess I'll allow it.

It's neat to think you can use the Flash interface still to deploy games to mobile via Unity.

With the support for vector graphics, I imagine you can still get performance issues if you aren't extremely mindful of optimizing your # of vectors though, right? Would Scaleform handle a whole detailed vector scene with alphas, tweened puppet animations, etc.?

Could you use Scaleform to port any existing Flash game to Unity, or does it only support a subset of Flash's features?

A class represents a concept, the framework for an object.
Pragmatically, it contains definitions of all of the instance variables ('responsibility for knowing') and methods ('responsibility for doing') that an instance of that class (an 'object') should have.

Conceptually, it represents the concept of an actor, or (formally) a 'dealie'. And it allows us to know all of the state information specific to each instance of that dealie, as well as what work we can request of said dealie.

It's the foundation of Object Orientation in Java.

The description above was, at best, an entirely procedural explanation, leaving no practical difference between a class in Java and a source file in C.
It's what allows us, when using Java, to employ such techniques as parametric polymorphism, subtype polymorphism, interfaces, as well as UML and O-O design patterns.
---
More directly, a little piece of my soul died because I teach this stuff for a living (including quite a bit of Java), and it was analogous to explaining that a torque wrench is what you use to pry off hubcaps when standing next to a mechanic. :)

Didn't mean it as an insult or anything, tman. :)

I haven't ever used game maker, but I can answer your other questions. java is lines of code compiled into classes. A class is a specification (think of it as a set of instructions) of how to java needs to display something, and tells how the object runs and moves, or what text to display and whatnot. The code in the classes are like the Individual steps. Almost anything can be done with java, as long as you take enough time to learn how to use it. right now I am working on a "Grenade Mod," and have been able to do everything from sounds, to making it bounce, to exploding or cover a certain area with fire or ice.

I haven't ever used game maker, but I can answer your other questions. java is lines of code compiled into classes to make them easier to find. Almost anything can be done with java, as long as you take enough time to learn how to use it. right now I am working on a "Grenade Mod," and have been able to do everything from sounds, to making it bounce, to exploding or cover a certain area with fire or ice.

Although it's not exactly what you requested, how about MMOM, Many Mods Of Minecraft (first thing that came to me)

I was wondering, is java a bunch of codes or is it easier to program like Game Maker? What are the possibilities with java?
