Howdy DBM. I'm just going through and putting some notes on pages that we will no longer be supporting the Flash version of Ballads anymore. :(

I'm doing well myself. Been working for about a year on a puzzle sports game that I hope gets released this year. It has potential to do really well. :)

How are you doing?

The demise of Flash has brought back many gaming memories, especially Reemus.

I wondered if this forum was ever looked at and how everyone was doing in 2020?

I hope you are all well!

I've now moved to Los Angeles to work for Kung Fu Factory directly. We've since released Pacific Rim: Breach Wars for mobile and are working on a Walking Dead mobile game next!
That is taking up all of my focus and energy so I've put on hold all side projects for ClickShake.

It's true. Our deal with FreshGames to work on Escape the Titanic for mobile was a learning curve for Jay and I, and at the end of that project we were not in a strong financial position. I planned to continue full time with ClickShake, but I took an opportunity to work at FreshGames directly, and from that time the site has not had much activity except for Ballads 1 releasing on Steam.

Since then I have never stopped full time game development. I've worked on several games with FreshGames, including Cubis, Escape Alcatraz, Famous Faces. I know work at Max Gaming Studios with Kung Fu Factory and Scopely on WWE: Champions, which released this year and has been very successful! It's been such a great opportunity for me to learn and grow in the games industry. (There were also some unreleased games I worked on too.) I've travelled to Boston, Seattle and Santa Monica (near Los Angeles) for my work in game development, which has been fantastic meeting people from around the country and the world.

Jay is working on new Visitor games and as mentioned Ballads of Reemus 2. He's got a new cool game studio under Zeebarf.

I still have plans for ClickShake and so I never wanted to say "goodbye" exactly. I still maintain the site and support customers of our games. Over the years I have started up a couple ClickShake projects which were cancelled, but for my next indie game I have planned and scoped it very intentionally so that it gets finished and released. For those curious about the next project, you can see my progress on it here: https://twitter.com/EntropicOrder. I'm planning to make some more announcements about this new game very soon.

So, there never really was an official "goodbye" post or anything for CSG, it just stagnated. But I had the opportunity to ask Jay about it on a recent Ballads 2 Kickstarter update (Yes, it's still happening!) and this is what he said.

"Essentially the gaming space changed on us, browser switched to mobile and we couldn't transition fast enough. I ran out of money and had to get another job. I didn't want to hamper Steve so I left Clickshake to re-evaluate my situation. Took me a few years but I'm happy I made it back!"

So it sounds like although Clickshake might be dead, Jay and Steve are still in the industry and working on games!

Good luck redember! I always recommend Flash as a nice starting software since it's easy to use and quick to prototype. However, eventually you'll want to branch out to other tools since Flash isn't as well suited on mobile devices.

You can't go wrong with learning Unity, since it's supported in browsers and on mobile devices.

Thanks for the tips but what I've already been studying coding for a few years now. What I'm really looking for is a more professional-type software that is used to develop video games.

But thank you for your taking time to try and help, I do appreciate it.

I can only give a little bit of advice on getting started with coding. Check out this fantastic website -> http://www.codecademy.com/#!/exercises/0

That site covers a number of languages and is very, very user friendly.

If you are interested in learning C++ -> http://www.learncpp.com/

Also, this is a neat website that will let you create games with minimum programming knowledge however you need to learn the basics of how this works so is a good place to start -> http://www.stencyl.com/

So I'm not 100% sure if this goes in this forum or not but it felt like the best place to put it.

Anyways, so I'm going into next Fall Semester of college as a Junior Computer Science Major, and my desire is to get into game development and programming. As such, I really want to play around with game development like click and point games (they're my fave type of web game) on the side, to give me more outside the classroom experience and was hoping that I could get a few ideas on how best to go about doing this (especially if Jay or Steve answer this, I really admire your guys' games).

I guess my first question would be, though, what would be the best type of software to use for this type of game development?

Any other tips and tricks from anyone at all are greatly appreciative.

This game was made in HTML5, and it even has multiplayer: http://browserquest.mozilla.org/

It's really a lot more than just HTML.

HTML5 looks like great technology, it's just hard to imagine everybody jumping on it since the code is completely open unless you require server side aspects. Since anyone can take the code and do what they want with it for disconnected games, it seems like it'd be a lot more difficult for developers to distribute their games as is and sell to sponsors. Why would someone pay money to get their logo put into the game when they can just edit it themselves? Tons of portals would just steal it and modify it to their liking.

I think HTML5 would be awesome if you could package it up like a Flash SWF and it was guaranteed to simply work consistently in every environment. I really need to read up on it more though, cuz I don't know everything that's possible with it.

The Unity plugin is cool, but a ton of people still don't have it right now compared to Flash, so if you're doing 2D art like we are it wouldn't make sense for us to move to that right now either.

Yah, me and my friend (He develops some stuff on newgrounds) were talking about this so i wanted to see what you guys thought about it. I really don't even see how you can use HTML5 to make a game. Isn't that used for making webpages?

Personally I don't feel any squeeze when it comes to Flash right now. Newgrounds and Kongregate and thousands of other portals and sponsors still use Flash and it's really hard to believe that's just going to drop off all of a sudden. There are new advancements for Flash developers still popping up like spaceport.io, which makes me think it's not just going to disappear too soon.

I'm not too worried about it because I know other languages like C++ and JavaScript, so we'll adapt when the time is right. However, we can still make games in Flash and package them as an EXE like we did for the Ballads executable if we wanted to. Also, there's a tool from Google that converts Flash vectors into vector XML useable in HTML5, so that's pretty neat.

I'm very curious to see how people are going to monetize HTML5 games.

The one thing to remember about HTML5 (at least, from a games position) is that it's really only being pushed by people who want to see it adopted.
There are relatively few cases of it being 'the platform of choice' for modern casual browser-based games.

Could this change? Absolutely, it could. But, if it does, it'll be driven by the desire to publish 'apps' with more convenient cross-platform support.

In any event, there's (currently) no reason to think that flash is dying. It's still the first choice for particularly content-rich interactive media. That fact, coupled with the advent of suites designed solely for porting flash code... well, I'm certainly interested in what Jay and Steve have to say on the subject, but if they have something else planned, I have to think it's more because of personal/professional interest than market forces.

(On a side note, I'm not sure how C++ got thrown in there. Compiled programs and client-side scripting aren't frequently given the same consideration for a given task. The only, admittedly significant, exception I can think of is for the aforementioned app development. But that's a sign of html5 taking marketshare from compiled languages like java; not of them both teaming up to detract from flash)

I know that a lot of flash developers are learning HTML5 and C++, and was wondering if you guys have any experience with other software or are learning it or what? Umm...
